Imagine a fingerprint – utterly distinctive, no two alike in the world. Just as each fingerprint is unique, so too is the neurology of every human being. This remarkable diversity of our brains fuels our individuality and creativity.
And just like fingerprints, conditions like Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Dyslexia, ADHD, ADD, OCD, Tourette’s, Anxiety, and Speech Delay, to name a few, are all unique representations of our brain’s natural variations – a concept known as Neurodiversity or Neurodivergence.
This does not mean these individuals are “abnormal”. On the contrary, they have the potential to demonstrate exceptional strengths in specific areas, often neglected because they’re not deemed “normal”.
ADHD might make organisation or memory a challenge for your child/teen, but their creative thinking could be unparalleled. An autistic teen might struggle in social situations, yet excel extraordinarily in music or arts.
Yet, we often fail to foster these talents because we attempt to fit these unique minds into “textbook” expectations. That’s why, at CHAMPS Academy, we shun a one-size-fits-all approach.
In Annette Du Bois’ Own Words!
Years ago, it was far too common for children showing even the slightest hint of autism to be relegated to a world of confinement and potent medication.
A narrow and misconceived perspective was cast on those whose progression didn’t fit within the standard milestones (from Asperger’s research, which became better known as ‘Asperger’s Syndrome’). Sadly, these unique individuals were stigmatised and consigned to the shadows.
A few decades prior, a prevalent notion was held that extreme therapeutic interventions could ‘rectify’ autism and other neurological diversities.
It was believed, regrettably, that there existed a ‘cure’.
It took some gruelling and, frankly, heartrending experiments to realise that the goal wasn’t about ‘mending’ these radiant young minds.
Instead, it was about comprehending their world in all its dazzling intricacy and appreciating the plethora of gifts they bring into our lives.
My heart aches when I reflect upon the countless young lives across history that were subject to such stark isolation, harsh treatments, and grave misunderstandings.
I am committed to illuminating change for neurodivergent young minds, ensuring that they are cherished and incorporated into society, irrespective of their neurological challenges or distinctive attributes.
This glimpse into our historical narrative is simply a backdrop against which I introduce my Environment Behaviour Re-engineering (EBR) process.
This process equips parents and their children with the necessary skills to not ‘fix’ the person but adapt the environment and modify behaviour.
Helping to tackle the hurdles thrown their way and highlight their unique strengths and abilities.
It’s about bolstering confidence, fostering self-worth, and celebrating individuality in a world that often demands conformity.
In essence, it’s time we dispense with the outdated notion of trying to stuff round pegs into square holes.
After all, life’s rich tapestry becomes infinitely more fascinating when it’s woven with threads of all colours, textures and patterns!
We recognise that every child is unique, and their support should be too.
