This Page Is For You If Your Child/Teen Has Been Diagnosed As Neurodivergent, Is Going Through The Assessment Process Or You Think They Might Be Neurodivergent?

Wherever you are in the process, they are likely experiencing one or more of the following, to varying degrees:

  • Social struggles: Starting conversations, making and keeping friends, lack of understanding of social nuances and etiquette, unpredictability of interacting with others.
  • Communication: Misreading or inappropriate non-verbal and verbal engagements, blurting out, selective mutism.
  • Emotional dysregulation: Lacking emotional control of anger, anxiety and other emotions that can last of hours, over-sensitive to change of routine or mistakes that create the massive meltdowns and persistent crying.
  • Challenging Behaviour: Disproportionate behaviour in relation to the situation that may have occurred, repetitive or physical behaviours that may harm the individual or those around them.
  • Concept of Time: Often referred as ‘time blindness’, lack of awareness to length or duration of activities or not able to relate to the importance of appointments and deadlines. May become fixated on a task that time disappears for them without awareness.
  • Motivation: Often varies depending on the level of interest or stimulation the task or activity offers. Many will be extremely motivated on the things they ‘like’ and resistant to the point of extreme delay or refusal on tasks that are boring or not relatable.
  • Personal Care: Daily reminders of basic hygiene needs such as brushing teeth, showering, etc. Left unchecked, many may go days without washing or personal care activities.
  • Sensory Sensitivities: Food, texture of clothes, sounds, light and other sensory aspects may cause extreme discomfort to the point of physical pain and emotional retreat.
  • Executive Function: Lacking ability to plan, structure and prioritise tasks, poor working memory, fixed thinking, deficiency in awareness to self regulate.
  • Sleep: Disruptive or inability to switch the brain off to self-settle, out of sync with typical body clocks creating challenges with school and day-to-day routines.

But instead of the challenges, stress, and confusion your child/teen can experience:

  • Effectively manage their Neurodivergence: Develop the skills and tools they need to navigate challenges and better manage all life areas.
  • Unlocking Potential: Discover and build upon their unique individual strengths to reach their full potential.
  • Building Confidence: Develop self-confidence, self-esteem, and a positive mindset, to feel empowered to overcome challenges.
  • Everyday Happiness: Improve essential life skills for independence and everyday living.
  • Confident Communication: Improve social communication skills and build better relationships.
  • Emotional Regulation: Develop healthy coping mechanisms for managing emotions effectively.

And as a Parent of a Neurodivergent child/teen, the benefits to you are these:

  • Understanding and Support: Gain a deeper understanding of your child/teen’s neurodivergence and how to best support them.
  • Empowerment: Develop the tools and knowledge to help your child/teen prosper and grow on their own terms.
  • Reduced Stress: Find strategies to manage stress and navigate challenges as a family.
  • Building Connections: Foster a stronger, more positive relationship with your child/teen.
  • Hope and Optimism: Feel hopeful and empowered about your child/teen’s future happiness.
  • Collaborative Approach: Work alongside a specialist and experienced Neurodivergent coach to create a personalised plan for your child and family.

parent holding a jigsaw of Neurodivergent child

Is this what your typical day looks like?

Some days are filled with wonder and smiles, but some days are just chaotic and stressful. So much so, more often than not, you dread facing another day.

Many parents with a neurodivergent child or teen often feel the same way (from what they tell me).

And it’s tough for young people with neurodivergence too, not only do they have the typical stresses and pressures of growing up, but also the challenges of their learning, cognitive processing, behaviour differences and social struggles etc.

Whether your child or teen has an official diagnosis, they’re currently undergoing assessment, or you simply sense they are neurodiverse?

Navigating the daily challenges that come with neurodivergent conditions can often feel exhausting and overwhelming even for the most resourceful parent.

But when it comes to neurodivergence, there is no “one-size-fits-all” textbook explanation!

While historical studies and neuroscience research provide valuable insights, the most crucial aspect is how young people with neurodiversity are supported?

Our focus should be on helping them grow, develop, integrate well into society, and reach their full potential in life.

Wouldn’t you agree?

That’s why I tailor my approach to each child and teen, addressing their specific needs with my unique and inclusive Neurodiversity Coaching for Young People.

This personalised and ‘made-to-measure’ methodology ensures every young individual receives the support and guidance necessary to live a productive and purposeful life.

Celebrating  the Wonder and Uniqueness of Neurological Diversity

Imagine a fingerprint, a singular mark unlike any other in the world. Just as no two fingerprints are the same, the neurology of every human being is uniquely their own.

This remarkable neurological diversity give us our individuality and creativity, making each of us truly one-of-a-kind.

Embracing and celebrating neurological differences in your child/teen, allows their distinct individuality and creativity to shine.

But, here’s the thing… it has to be nurtured, honed and directed. Otherwise it can be likened to trying to tame a wild pony with a piece of string.

Just as fingerprints are unique representations of individuality, conditions such as:

  • Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
  • Dyslexia
  • ADHD
  • ADD
  • OCD
  • Tourette’s Syndrome
  • Anxiety
  • Speech Delay
  • Etc.

This is by no means an exhaustive list.

These are unique manifestations of the natural variations in our brain’s wiring – a concept known as Neurodiversity or Neurodivergence.

Each condition is a distinct expression of the remarkable diversity inherent in the human mind, reflecting the vast spectrum of cognitive and neurological profiles that make us all wonderfully and uniquely different.

Those with the above conditions are absolutely not “abnormal” – quite the opposite. In fact, they possess the potential to demonstrate exceptional strengths and unique abilities in specific areas.

Too often, these remarkable talents and qualities are overlooked or neglected simply because they deviate from what society deems “normal.”

By recognising and nurturing neurodivergent individuals’ inherent gifts, we turn them into powerful and positive traits that enhance life and empower the child/teen.

Nurture Their Unique Strengths and Abilities

For example: ADHD might make executive functioning skills, such as structuring, sequencing tasks, time awareness, and memory a challenge. However, their unique neurodivergent minds often possess an exceptional capacity for creative thinking that can be unparalleled.

By understanding and embracing both the challenges and strengths that come with ADHD, as well as getting the necessary support and help, these individuals can truly embrace their remarkable creative abilities.

Or an autistic teen might struggle in social situations but excel extraordinarily in music or arts.

Unfortunately, we frequently neglect to cultivate these extraordinary creative talents because we try to conform these unique minds to conventional “textbook” expectations.

This is why, at CHAMPS Academy, we reject the notion of a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, we embrace neurodiversity and tailor our coaching methods to support and guide them to embrace their individual strengths and abilities.

Allowing them the freedom to flourish and grow into the well-rounded and more capable person they deserve to be.

Neurodivergent Specialist Coach Annette Du Bois Shares Her Perspective And The Shocking History Of Neurodivergence

For far too long, children showing even the slightest hint of autism were often relegated to a world of confinement and potent medication.

A narrow and misconceived perspective was cast on those whose development “didn’t fit” within standard milestones, stemming from research on what became known as ‘Asperger’s Syndrome’. Sadly, these unique individuals were stigmatised and consigned to the shadows.

Decades ago, a prevalent belief held that extreme therapeutic interventions could ‘cure’ autism and other neurological diversities. It was regrettably believed that there existed a ‘fix’ for neurodivergence.

It took grueling and, frankly, heartrending experiments to realise that the goal shouldn’t be about ‘mending’ these radiant young minds. Instead, it was about understanding their world in all its dazzling complexity and appreciating the plethora of gifts they bring into the world.

My heart aches when I reflect upon the countless young lives across history that were subjected to such stark isolation, harsh treatments, and grave misunderstandings.

I am committed to illuminating change for neurodivergent young minds, ensuring that they are cherished and fully incorporated into society, irrespective of their neurological challenges or distinctive attributes.

This glimpse into our historical narrative provides the backdrop for my ‘Environment Behaviour Re-engineering’ (EBR) process. This process equips parents and their children with the necessary skills to not ‘fix’ the person but adapt the environment and modify behavior.

It helps tackle the hurdles they face and highlights their unique strengths and abilities. It’s about bolstering confidence, fostering self-worth, and celebrating individuality in a world that often demands conformity.

In essence, it’s time we dispense with the outdated notion of trying to force round pegs into square holes. Instead, we must embrace neurodiversity and create environments where all minds can thrive.

We recognise that every child is unique, and their support should be too.

For neurodivergent young people, this comprehensive yet simple approach offers practical, real-world techniques and strategies that they can apply and really use long-term.

While neurodivergence encompasses a vast complexity, there are common struggles that many individuals face, regardless of their specific condition.

This approach addresses those shared challenges, providing neurodivergent children and teenagers with real-world, tailored tools and methods to navigate daily life more effectively and build essential skills for as they mature.

Annette’s comprehensive yet straightforward approach offers practical, long-lasting strategies for neurodivergent young individuals. Despite the intricacies of neurodivergence, many share common challenges across conditions.

The techniques my coaching provides equips them with real-world tools they can readily apply and actually use in everyday life, fostering sustained personal growth and self-led-empowerment.

Additionally, neurodivergent individuals may experience co-occurring conditions, also known as comorbidities, which can compound the challenges faced by the young person and their family.

For instance, a child or adolescent diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) might also exhibit traits associated with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), or other conditions.

Navigating life with a Neurodivergent child can be challenging — but it doesn’t have to ruin your life

Navigating life with a neurodivergent child can be challenging without structured strategies and techniques to foster positive behaviors and create a supportive environment, both at home and in school settings when possible.

Without these tools, daily routines can become increasingly difficult and draining for the entire family.

Parenting a neurodivergent child is a unique journey that often brings exhaustion and emotional strain.

That’s why it’s crucial to have a safe, confidential space dedicated solely for parents – a sanctuary where you can find understanding, support, and rejuvenation amidst the demands of the neurodivergent journey.

As a collaborative team, we work together to develop personalised and workable strategies and practical routines tailored to your child/teen’s unique needs. Our goal is not only to equip them with a comprehensive toolkit they can utilise throughout their adult life but also to cultivate an appreciation for their remarkable skills and strengths.

By fostering a positive self-awareness, your child is empowered to embrace their neurodivergence as a valuable part of their identity, setting the foundation for a fulfilling and self-affirming journey into adulthood.

Neurodivergence must be seen as a strength and NOT a weakness!

The Neurodivergent assessment and diagnosis process can be emotionally challenging, often leaving your child feeling different or disconnected from their peers. However, this newfound understanding presents an opportunity to not only recognise the unique obstacles they may face but also to celebrate their innate strengths and remarkable qualities.

My goal is to guide families like yours in embracing neurodivergence as a valuable aspect of your child/teen’s identity. Together, we can cultivate a supportive environment that nurtures their natural attributes, fostering self-acceptance and empowering them to thrive on their own terms.

By reframing this journey as one of self-discovery and growth, we can transform what may initially feel like a limitation into a profound source of resilience and self-awareness.

embracing neurodiversity

Talking of strength… let’s just mention the World’s Strongest Man!

Recently, I had the privilege of interviewing Tom Stoltman, a three-time World’s Strongest Man champion, who shared his inspiring journey of growing up with autism. In his late teens, Tom began to recognise his neurodivergence as a source of strength and resilience, ultimately embracing it as his superpower.

Through our conversation, Tom shed light on how his unique neurocognitive profile provided him with remarkable focus, determination, and an unwavering commitment to his passions. He discussed the challenges he faced, but more importantly, he highlighted the incredible potential that lies within neurodivergent individuals when they are empowered to embrace their authentic selves.

Tom’s story serves as a powerful reminder that neurodivergence is not a limitation but rather a distinctive perspective that can fuel extraordinary achievements. His journey exemplifies the transformative impact of self-acceptance, self-advocacy, and harnessing one’s innate strengths to pursue ambitious goals with unwavering passion and perseverance.

Watch/listen to my interview with autism advocate Tom Stoltman below:

Let’s give your child/teen the took-kit and skills they need for a happier and more ‘life-ready’ future

Recognising the unique nature of each individual’s neurodivergence, I assure you that there are no one-size-fits-all solutions or rigid methodologies (such as “tick-sheets”) here. Instead, my approach is centered on creating a personalised plan meticulously tailored to your child’s or teen’s distinct needs, strengths, and aspirations.

By embracing their distinctive traits and cultivating a nurturing environment, we can empower them to flourish, harnessing their inherent abilities to thrive in society and achieve all they can be on their own terms.

To Annette, it’s all about living the Neurodiverse life with Confidence.
